Surrounding us all is an endless flood of information-inviting, assaulting and teasing our senses. Even in pitch black darkness, with my eyes tightly shut, I still sense it. Overwhelmed at times with this sensory overload, I am often uncertain how to handle all I am perceiving, how to filter the walls of stimuli and how to curb the instinct to control things that are outside myself.
I am interested in the moments when we release control. That moment of surrender creates a space for our senses, memories and desires to collide. It is within this place we can explore how we use our senses to adapt and survive frustration, pain and loss; how we combine our sensory information with our spirituality to find peace. It is the paradox of relinquishing control to gain freedom.
The Process
Using 19th Century historical contact printing processes, this series emerged by layering gum bichromate over palladium prints to produce subtle variations in tone, texture and details. The process mirrors the many layers of information received from our senses. Each print is comprised of multiple layers of transparent gum pigments printed over 16.5” x 16.5” palladium prints on 100% cotton rag paper. Some are reworked with drawn, collaged and sewn elements. Each piece is unique as the layers are added one at a time, it takes many days to complete a finished piece.
